The game fan tan originated way back at least 2,000 years and introduced by the Chinese immigrant workers in the Western United States in the second half of the 19th century. It is played mainly in East Asia where it can be found in casinos and gambling houses and among Chinese communities elsewhere. Today, many online casino sites already have their own version of the game to offer to players.
Fan Tan is a card game that is easy to learn for an 8 years old and onwards. Having a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 8 players per round. The game uses a deck or regular poker cards, the joker not included. Since the game is very simple, the basic game can be learned in just a few minutes or even as the game progresses. The object of the game is to play all the cards in one's hand, one at a time, against cards laid onto the table by the players. The first player with no remaining card wins.
To play the game, a square marked in the center of a table is laid on it, the side being marked 1 to 4. The banker put on the table a double handful of small buttons, beads, coins, dried beans or similar materials which he covers with a metal bowl or “tan koi”. The players bet on the numbers of, setting their stakes on the side of the square which bears the number selected. Players can also bet on the corners for example between number 2 and number 3. After all the bets are made, the bowl is removed and the “tan kun” or cropier will remove the buttons from the heap, four at a time, until the final batch is reached. If it contains four buttons, the backer of number 4 wins, if three, the backer of number 3 wins, if two the backer of number 2 wins and if one, the backer of number 1 wins.
A five percent (5%) commission is deducted by the banker from the stake and the winner wins four times the amount of his stake thus reduced.
Once a player becomes more comfortable with the basics of the game fan tan, however, he will begin to realize its potential as an exercise in the formation of strategies and the advantage of thinking and planning ahead over time, as well as the importance of tracking the activities of other players during the game.
Fan tan is no longer as popular as it once was, having been replaced by modern online casino games and other traditional Chinese games such as mahjong and pai gow. However, it was once the favorite pastime of the Chinese in America.
