The New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's speculation ended on the destiny of the bill when the announcement has been released last March 3 by his office declaring that he had vetoed the proposal quoting legal and constitutional concerns.
The said veto means that the New Jersey will not become the first state in the US to legalize online casino sites, poker rooms and other forms of online gambling.
In the beginning, Christie would have had to make his decision known by Feb. 24, but it has been announced by the Governor's office the the decision would be one week delay because of a legislative recess.
In regards to Gov. Christie's decision, “legal issues and constitutional concerns” both struggled him. One of Gov. Christie's main concern is that the bill does not contain ways to impede other businesses like nightclubs, restaurants and cafes from beginning online gambling venues. Another reason for the governor not to approve the bill is a way that facilitates the use of a part of online gambling revenues to support the industry of New Jersey horse racing. This is opposite to Gov. Christie's efforts to terminate the industry from state subsidies.
Now, the prevent the execution of bill S3167, named as Intrastate Internet Gambling Bill, the Governor used his veto. It would have to go back to the legislature and pass with a majority of two – thirds in order for the veto to be overridden.
The veto was not without its share of intense drama. At the start of the day, the two sponsors of the bill, Joe Brennan Jr. of iMEGA and Democratic Senator Raymond Lesniak, strongly requested to be assured by the office of the governor that the Governor would only provisionally veto the bill on the ground that it did not do enough to impede illegitimate gambling agents from setting up near the state's borders. The Christie's name would be added to the bill partnering Lesniak and the latter would re – introduce the bill to both houses by the following week. But pressure seems to have been brought on the governor after that and he turned down the bill altogether.
The bill's author, Reymund Lesniak has not given up hope. He already announced that “I look forward to working with Governor Christie and his administration in order to get Internet wagering up and running as soon as possible. We cannot let this opportunity slip through our grasp.”
Above it all, it would be doubtful that the Republican members of the legislature would favor the bill for the second time around. Christie is a Republican and attempting to override his veto would be a major indication of disbelieve from his own party members.
